When You Might Need a Foot Orthotic
Allen Orthopedic is one of the speed dial numbers coded into my phone. John and Leslie as well as their staff are very attentive to my needs and are always a phone call away. From billing to my brace, I never have to be worried or concerned while my care is in their hands. I have been going to Allen Orthopedic for almost a decade now and would not go anywhere else. John never hesitates to have me come in to see him (regardless of how busy he may be) no matter how small of an concern I might be having with my brace. Of my 32 years, I have been seeing an orthopedic (due to polio) for the last 28 or so and John has by far been the best. He not only knows how to manage a variety of issues I deal with due to my needs, but goes beyond to test and experiment things he thinks will be better for me in the long run. His approach is much different then the previous individuals that I have seen that often stuck to the status quo. Given this, John and I have worked together to see what we can do and I walk (literally) everyday without a concern. Thanks, John and the Allen Orthopedic team!
In 2006 I became a below the knee amputee due to cancer. I was 29yr. and scared. My orthopedic surgeon referred me to John Allen by saying "I have this guy and he's the best". Walking into the office for the first time, I received the warmest welcome from the Leslie at the front desk and while discussing my prosthetic options with John, he explained a lot of options. It was overwhelming to learn about all the options for different feet and ankles. John gave me places to look for my specific needs and helped me make an informed decision to what would work for me. Over the last 11 yrs. I have gone through many legs, John continues to support me when during my ever changing needs and keeps me up to date on the newest options out there. They are like family in the office and I always have a positive and calming experience there.
In 2007, I lost my right leg below the knee to a bone infection. At that time, I was working as the Chief Engineer at a large commercial facility in San Francisco, and supporting my 15-year-old daughter. I was unsure whether I would be able to continue to work in the field that I’d spent most of my adult life doing. I was 47 years old when I lost my leg. During my recovery, I had the good fortune of meeting John and Leslie Allen. They guided me through the process of walking and adjusting to life with a prosthetic leg. They helped me to gain the confidence I needed to play golf again, to drive a car again, and get back to work. I can’t imagine anyone better suited to helping people get back to living their lives after losing a limb, or dealing with other orthopedic devices than the Allen family. They are competent, professional kind and compassionate. I’ve spoken to some of their other patients, and I know they feel the same way about Allen Orthopedic Labs as I do. I can’t compare the Allens to any other labs, as I would never consider leaving Allen Orthopedic Labs. As a matter of fact, I won’t let them retire until long after I do.
I have been a patient of Allen Orthopedics for four years for treatment of my scoliosis after initial diagnosis from Stanford Orthopedics, and was recommended by a friend to contact John Allen for a brace. From the moment we arrived in his office, we were met with friendly smiles and care from John and his wife, Leslie. John is very personable and makes a genuine effort to get to know his patients. He works to make sure his patients receive the best care and products to improve their situation. With the custom back brace he made, my curvature went from 28 to 21 which was very impressive. His practice is one that you won’t find anywhere else today. When I was home from college for a weekend, he opened his office on a Sunday morning to fit me properly with a new brace as I had grown out of my former one. He’s the family-style specialist that does things like this that you don’t see happening today. I am immensely grateful for all he has done to always ensure I am receiving the best care possible with the maximum results.
Our sons have been seeing John Allen for 14 years and we cannot recommend him more highly. Both boys have muscular dystrophy and were born with club feet, and John has done an amazing job determining the correct brace for them as they have grown from 3 feet tall to over 6 feet tall now. He designed their first AFOs for them when they were 4 and 5 and miraculously made the process easy and fun - they loved picking out the colors and designs. John and Leslie are a complete delight and their abundant positive energy is immensely helpful! John has helped our boys evolve from AFOs to SMOs and blue rockers, and we have found night splints really helpful too. All of these supports have enabled them to play sports and keep up with their peers and we are immensely grateful for John’s excellent work. We will never go to anyone else!
